It's Only Hair: What My Daughter’s Fight for Life Taught Me About Living

Four years after surviving Stage 4 cancer, eleven-year-old Myra often sighs longingly, “I wish I had cancer again”.

In April 2021, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, six-year-old Myra was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma, one of the fastest-growing forms of cancer. Absolutely shattered and faced with the very real possibility of losing her daughter, Brenda had to decide how she and Myra would live during this uncertain time—how to spend their limited energy, how to remain present, and how to shape the experience for a young child.

When Myra lost her hair and refused a wig, her nonchalant response, “It’s only hair” became the family’s rallying cry against letting illness dictate their narrative. Instead of pity parties they threw a birthday party for Poh the dog, held splash contests with rain puddles, built an indoor cinema with fairy lights, and even a baked sponge cake right in the hospital room.

Narrated through 27 bite-sized lessons, It’s Only Hair is a hybrid of memoir and ‘survival guide’, for caregivers, patients, and anyone navigating hardship, that takes readers from handling emotions, managing time, accepting help, and most importantly, reclaiming joy.

It’s Only Hair is a powerful testament that while we cannot always control our circumstances, our perspective and mindset determine how we experience even the darkest moments in our lives.

Brenda draws on this experience to offer an empathetic perspective for readers navigating their own prolonged hardships.

A self-professed expert in the art of the afternoon nap, her favourite word is ‘savour’, a principle she applies to everything, from slow mornings to eating. When she isn’t working or dabbling in various craft projects, she can be found taking long walks, hiking, swimming, or tending to her small menagerie of animals (two dogs + two bunnies).

She also manages her blog, where she shares reflections and practical ideas to make the care giving journey feel less daunting.
